What is developmental psychology?
The study of a physical, mental, and social changes that occur throughout the human lifespan.
Zygote (first 14 days)
Less than half of fertilized eggs lastover 2 weeks (miscarriage).
How many miscarriages are due to chromosomal normalities?
50-70%
How many chromosomes are in a body? Which pair determines the sex?
24 pairs, 46 in total. Pair #23 determines the sex. XX=female XY=male
Embryo (2 to 8 weeks)
the cells divide into 2 distinct layers. The inner cells will develop into a child. The outer will develop into the placenta & amniotic sac.
Fetus (8 weeks to birth)
by the end of the sixth month, the internal organs have developed enough to allow a premature baby a chance at survival.
Teratogen
any drug, virus, or other substance that can reach the baby during prenatal development & cause a birth defect.
What does Nicotene do to a baby while still in the womb?
increases it's heart rate, low birth weight, premature birth, & miscarriages
What effect does Cocaine have on an unborn child?
Causes the blood vessels in the unbilical chord to contract, this leads to birth defects.
What is the effect of marijuana on a unborn baby?
Low birth weight, respiratory issues, premature birth
What is fetal alcohol syndrome?
the child may have a small disporportioned head & life long brain abnormalities.
What can influence prenatal development?
chemicals, drugs, & x-rays can cause dad's sperm to become weak & deformed which leads to birth defects.
What are the capabilities of the newborn?
sensory equipment & reflexes to interact with people and seek nourishment.
What is the rooting reflex?
when you brush or rub a baby's cheek it'll open it's mouth for nourishment.
What is the moro (startle) reflex?
if you scare a baby it will kick both of it's legs up & throw it's arms in the air.
Physical Development
before birth, the nerve cells in the brain begin tp form. After birth, these nerve cells multiply & form connections.
What is plasticity?
the brains ability to modify or rewire itself in response to damage.
What is cognitive development?
refers to all mental activity involved in thinking, knowing, & remembering

a theorist who said the mind of a child is not a miniature model of an adult's
What is schema?
concept or category that organizes ideas
What is assimilation?
incorporate or add new experiences into existing schema
What is accomodation?
where you adjust or change schema to fit a new experience
