74 cards·by kayleeallen27
Study this deck
anatomy
the study of the structure of the parts
physiology
the study of the function of the parts
homeostasis
maintaining the body's internal environment
catabolic reaction
break down and release energy
anabolic reaction
build up and consume energy
metabolism
the sum of all chemical reactions occuring within an organsim
covalent bonds
refer to the sharing of electrons
ionic bonds
refer to losing and gaining electron
hydrogen bonds
important in shaping molecules
enzyme
lowers activation energy and make it more likely a reaction
hydrophobic
means to dislike wter
hydrophillic
means to like water
ion
a charged particle
cation
a positively charged particle
anion
a negatively charged particle
phagocytosis
cell eating and involves cleaning up stuff
osmosis
the movement of water from low concentration to high concentration
mRNA
rna that carries dna message from the nucleolus to the ribome. it is found in the nucleus
Rrna
the site of protein synthesis, found in the cytoplasm
tRNA
carries the amino acids to the ribosome
ribosomes
the site of prtoein synthesis
endoplasmic reticulum
a membranous tubular network in cells
mitochondria
specialized for ATP production
golgi apparatus
sacks that package proteins into vesicles, which is a bag of something
nucleolus
produces ribosomes
protons
have a positive charge
electrons
have a negative charge
neutrons
have no charge
acid
ph below 7
base
ph above 7
acids
dissociate into hydrogen ions when dissolved
bases
dissociate into hyroxyl ions when dissolved
ATP
the energy that cells uses, created through glucose cataboism. produced by mitochondria
DNA
carries our genetic code and makes up chromosomes
lysosomes
vesicles of digestive enzymes
endocrine
glands secrete inside the body
exocrine
glands secrete outside the body
merocrine
glands secrete by simply exocytosis, cell is not damaged
apocrine
glands secete part of the ccell with their product, does not kill cell
holocrine
glands secrete the whole cell (the cell bursts) and cell dies
four major types of tissues
epithelial, connective, muscle, neural
epithelial
tissue that covers/lines he body or is the secretory portion of a gland
connective
binds supports protects insuulates transports and separates tissues
muscle
tissue is specialized for contraction
nural
tissue conducts impulses or takes care of neurons
sebaceous
oil glands
sudoriferous
sweat glands
cartilage
the only type of connective tissue that has no blood
hypodermis
insulates (fat storage)
keratin
a protein that makes up skin
carotene
the yellowish pigament of the skin
hemoglobin
the pinkish hue of the skin and carries oxygen in the blood
melanin
the orange and borwn color of the skin
inflammation
causes vascular dialation inceased plasma membrane permeability, heat, redness, extra nutrients and swelling
calcitonin
a hormone produced by the thyroid gland that inhibits osteoclasts and decreases blood calcium levels
parathormone
increases blood calcium by turning on osteoclasts (decreases bone calcium)
epiphyseal plate
remains cartilage to allow growth
synovial joints
have a fluid filled cavity and are free moving
ligaments
connect bone to bone and prevent excessive movement in synovial joints
meniscus
cushion and improve fit of bones
tendons
connect muscle to bone
bursae
a synovial membrane sack filled with synovial fluid, reduces friction
periosteum
surrounds bone
isometric contraction
do not produce movement (pushing against a wall)
isotonic contraction
conractions produce movement
actin
does the sliding in a muscle contracton
myosin
does the pulling in a muscle contraction
muscle fiber
a muscle cell (group of myofibrils)
lactic acid
build up causes fatigue and muscle cramps
myoglobin
contains oxygen in muscles
red fibers
have lots of myoglobins so they have lots of oxygen
white fibers
have little myoglobin so they have little oxygen
glycolitic fibers
fatigue easily and fast
oxidative fibers
have a lot of myoglobin so they do not fatigue easiily
