Closing
An inscription page found at the end of a yearbook listing details that pertain to print
specifications of the book.
Colophon
Text in a book. It can be copy, caption copy or headline copy. Every yearbook spread typically
includes a copy block to tell a story.
Copy
Thick cardboard (binder board) covered with printed or silk-screened materials that
protects the pages.
Cover
A single page or double page spread used to seperate each section of the yearbook.
Divider
Heavy sheet of paper that attaches the book to the cover.
Endsheet
The first few pages of the yearbook, when the yearbook staff typically reinforces the theme
introduced on the cover for the first time.
Opening
Used as a way to organize the yearbook for the staff and the reading audience.
Section
Phrases and logos that come from the theme concept and are used for each section of the book.
Spin-offs
Two facing pages in a publication.
Spread
A verbal statement and a visual look that brings all parts of the yearbook together.
Theme
Coverage that allows yearbook staffs to tell their students stories in multiple ways.
Alternative Coverage
Topics that will be featured on individual spreads as well as how the topics will be
highlighted.
Coverage
Also called process color. The process to produce color pages on an offset press.
Four Color Process
One side of a signature; the eight pages that are printed on one side of a press sheet.
Flat
A complete alphabetical listing along with corresponding page numbers, of al students,
teachers and administrators featured in the yearbook.
Index
The overall map that shows the placement of every layout in the yearbook.
Ladder Diagram
Sometimes called sigs. Sixteen pages that are printed on both sides of one press sheet on an
offset press.
Signature
A binding method where 16 pages are printed on one sheet of paper, then folded and ultimately
sewn together with other signatures.
Smythe Sewn Binding
One color that is printed on a page, usually a black and white page for emphasis.
