Study this deck
tissues
differing groups of cells that have similar shape, size, structure, intercellular materials, and functions
epithelial tissue
protects the body by covering internal and external surfaces; lines cavity walls
squamous epithelial cells
flat, irregular-shaped cells that line the heart, blood, and lymphatic vessels, body cavities and alveoli (air sacs) of the lungs
cuboidal epithelial cells
cube-shaped cells that line the kidney tubules, cover the ovaries, and secretory parts of certain glands
columnar epithelial cells
elongated, with the nucleus near the bottom and often ciliated; used for glandular secretion
endocrine gland cells
ductless glands that secrete directly into the blood stream
exocrine gland cells
cells that secrete through ducts
connective tissue
supports and connects organs and tissue
adipose tissue
stores lipids (fats) and acts as a filter tissue, cushions, supports, and insulates the body
areolar (loose) tissue
surrounds organs and supports nerve cells and blood vessels
dense fibrous tissue
forms ligaments, tendons, and aponeuroses
ligaments
strong, flexible bands which hold bones together at joints
tendons
white, glistening bands attaching skeletal muscles to bones
aponeuroses
flat, white bands of tissue holding one muscle to another or to the bone covering called the periosteum
fascia
a fibrous connective tissue that wraps around muscles and groups them together
supportive connective tissue
osseous tissue, cartilage, hyaline cartilage, fibrocartilage, elastic cartilage, vascular tissue, blood, and lymph
osseous (bone) tissue
makes up the skeleton
cartilage
provides firm but flexible support for the embryonic skeleton and the adult skeleton
hyaline cartilage
forms the skeleton of the embryo
fibrocartilage
a strong, flexible, supportive substance located within intervertebral discs and the pubic synthesis of the pubic bone
elastic cartilage
firm, but flexible elastic fiber matrix
