Discrete variable
Consists of seperate, indivisible, categories. Zero values can exist bwtn two neighboring
categories
Constructs AKA hypothetical constructs
internal attributes/characteristics that cannot be directly observed. Useful for
describing/explaining behavior
Operational Definition
identifies measurement procedure (order of operations) for measuring external behavior.
Uses resulting measurements as a definition
Experimental condition
Those who DO (receive treatment)
Dependent Variable
The variable that is observed to assess the effect of the treatment
Variable
Characteristic or condition that changes or has a different value for different individuals
inferential statistics
Using sample sata to make general conclusions about populations
Uppercase N
used to identify the # of scores in a population
Lowercase n
identifies the # of scores in a sample
Greek letter Sigma
used to stand for summation
EX
Means to add all scores for the variable of X
Correlational Method
Two different variable are observed to determine whether there is a relationship bwtn them
Sample
Set of individuals selected from a population usually intended to represent the population
in a research study
population
Entire set of the individuals of interest for a particular research question
Statistics
Set of mathmatical procedures for: organizing, summarizing, and interpreting information
Descriptive statistics
Statistical procedures used to sammarize, organize, and simplfy data
statstic
Value, usually numerical, that describes a sample. Ususally derived from measurements of
the individuals in the sample
Sampling error
The naturally occuring discrepency or error that exists bwtn a sample statistic and the
coding population parameter
Control condition and control groups
Neutral, placebo, means no treatment, provides a baseline
Independent variable
The variable that is manipulated by the researcher and consists of the antecendent
conditions that are manipulated prior to observing
data
(plueral) measurements/observations
data set
collection
Datum
(singular) single measurement/observation
raw score
datum
Parameter
value, usually numerical value, that describes a popluation and is usually derived from
measurements of the individuals of a population
Interval scale
Consists of ordered categories that are all intervals of exactly the same size and reflect
differences in magnitude. Zero point is arbitrary
Ordinal scale
Consists of a set of categories that are organized in an ordered sequence (1st, 2nd, 3rd)
Nominal Scale
Not quatative and consists of a set of categories that have different names. Label and
categoriaze but do not make quantive distinctions
Ratio Scale
An interval scale with additional features of an absolute zero point. Ratios of #'s reflect
ratios of magnitude
Real limits
Boundaries of intervals for scores that are represented on a continous # line and is halfway
bwtn two scores
Continous variable
There are an infinite # of possible values that fall between any two observed values.
Divisible into an infinate# of fractional parts
