Study this deck
Elements
the basic building blocks of matter
Atom
the smallest particle of an element
Neutron
has no electrical charge
Proton
has a positive charge
Electron
has a negative charge
Periodic Table of Elements
a table of organized elements
Compound
a type of matter made of a combination of elements
Molecule
the smallest particle of a substance that has the properties of that substance
Salts
all have at least one kind of metal element and one kind of nonmetal element. They can form crystals.
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solid, Liquid, and gas
What shape is a liquid?
They take the shape of their container.
What will lower the freezing point?
Adding salt
Do gases have a definite shape?
No
What is condensation?
occurs when a gas turns into a liquid.
What is evaporation?
occurs when particls leave a liquid and become a gas.
Example of evaporation
water puddles
Example of condensation
dew on the ground
Concentrated
a solution with so much solute that it is close to being saturated
Dilute
little solute in a solution in comparison with the amount of solvent
Saturated
a solution that contains all the solute that can be dissolved without changing the temperature
Mixture
materials are placed together but do NOT form a bond
Simple Mixture
materials can be separated because they have different properties
Example of Alloy
Bronze, Brass
Dissolve
particles separate and spread throughout a solvent
