Strophic
A vocal or choral composition structure in which each verse has the same tune.
Through Composed
A vocal or choral composition in which there is little or no repetition of the music.
Homophony
Texture in which all parts move together rhythmically, or in which a prominent melody with
accompaniment is heard.
Polyphony
Texture which consists of two or more melodic lines, possibly of equal importance and which
weave independently of each other.
Anacrusis
A note or notes which appear before the first complete bar.
Syncopation
Occurs when accents fall on notes which are normally unaccented.
Walking Bass
This is a bassline which moves at a speed of one note per beat.
Ground Bass
A pattern of notes in the bass which constantly repeats while the melody moves on.
Pedal
A note, usually in the bass, which is held or repeated while the melody changes.
Alberti Bass
Simple keyboard accompaniment consisting of the notes of a chord played in the following
order: lowest, highest, middle, highest.
Inverted Pedal
A sustained or repeated note heard in an upper part instead of the bass.
Contrary Motion
Two musical lines which move in opposite directions.
Cluster
A group of notes played on keyboard, forming a discord.
Discord
A chord in which certain notes clash.
Modulation
A change of key.
Cross Rhythms
A rhythmic effect in which one part is playing a different pattern of accents to another part.

A major chord coming at the end of a piece or section of music that has been written in a minor key.
