Study this deck
Under what conditions is RISC faster than CISC?
When it is combined with a microprocessor architecture capable of executing the instruction using fewer cycles per instruction
What is a disadvantage of using RISC?
A more complex task requires more FDE cycles to complete than with CISC
What are the physical advantage of RISC?
It is more simple to design, requires less power, generates less heat and is more portable as it is smaller
How is CISC designed?
It is designed such that one instruction can execute several low level operations, one instruction may take several FDE cycles
What are the types of addressing modes used by CISC?
Indexed, Intermediate, Direct or Indirect
What are some practicle disadvantages of CISC?
they are less portable and they tend to be more exspensive
What are the practicle advantages of CISC?
It makes the life of a programmer easier as they can accomplish the same task in fewerinstructions.
What are the main differences between CISC and RISC?
RISC has an emphasis on software and CISC has an emphasis on Hardware, RISC has lower cycles per second and more transistors.
Why is SIMD useful in GPU's?
Much of processing requires the same action to be performed on different data, eg verticies ofan object might require the same tranlation.
What are four main types of processor?
Co-Processors, Scalar CPU, Array/Vector CPU and Parallel Processor.
How are the Processors within a parallel processor coordinated?
they are coordinated by a complex operating system, programs must be specifically written for parallel processing.
What are the advantages of a Parallel Processor?
Faster than one processor when handling lots of data, Not limited by bus transfer rate and Can make maximum use of CPU despite bottlenecks.
What are the disadvantages of a Parallel Processor?
Only certain types of problem are suitable - if components parts of the problem depend on each other its not suitable, and it is more costly
