Appellee
The party in a cause against whom an appeal has been taken. This is the party who wins the
lawsuit.
Appellant
When a party who loases at trial or lower court appeals the decision to a higher court for review
for material error.
Appellate
Pertaining to a stage of judicial review
Appellate Court
The higher court that reviews the decision of a lower court after an appeal is filed.
Affirm
To ratify or confirm a former law or judgement, as when the supreme court affirms the judgment
of the court of common pleas.
Reverse
The decision of a superior court by whicht he judgment, sentence or decree of the inferior
court is annulled.
Remand
To send back or recommit.
Cause of Action
A recongnized legal right to bring an action in a court of law for which a plaintiff can sue for
damages and compensation
Statute
A law enacted by a state legislature or by Congress.
Ordinance
Laws enacted by local government, such as those adopted by a town/city council or board.

Regulation
A rule created by an agency that has the force of law.
Opinion of the Court
A decision by the court (Verdict) which is accompanied by a written explanation of the reason
for the courts findings and decision.

Court decisions froma higher court in the same jurisdiction
Persuasive Authority
Court decisions from an equal or lower court from thte same jurisdiction or from a court in a
different jurisdiction
