Allusion
An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioned it explicitly; an
indirect or passing reference.
Apostrophe
Figure of speech in which a speaker directly addresses an absent or dead person, an abstract
quality, or non-human things thought to respond
imagery
Language that appeals to the senses
Personification
Kind of metaphor in which a non-human thing or quality is talked about as if it were human.
Symbol
Person, place, thing, or event that stands for both itself and something beyond itself. (lion
stands for courage.)
Rhyme
repetition of accented vowel sounds and all sounds following them ithat are close together in
a poem (blew and flew).
Enjambment
The continuation of a syntactic unit from one line verse into the next line without a pause
(run-on).
Internal Rhyme
A rhyme involving a word in the middle of a line and another at the end of the line or in the middle
of the text.
End Rhyme
Rhymed on the teminal syllables of the verses at the end.
End-Stopped Rhyme
A line ending ina full pause, often indicated by appropriate punctuation such as a period or
semicollon.
Caesura
A pause or break in the poetry.
Meter
A generally regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables (TYger TYger BUrning
BRIght)
Anaphora
The repitition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses (Having no light!
Having no fire!)
Sature
A kind of writing that ridicules human weakness, vice, or folly in order to bring about social
reform.
Caricature
A picture, description, or imitation of a person or thing in which certain characteristics
are exaggerated to create a comic.
Parody
The imitation of a work of literature, art or music for amusement or instruction.
Pun
A play of the multiple meanings of words, or two words that sound alike but have two different
meanings.
Analogy
A comparison of two things that show thats they are alike in certain aspects. (creating a work
of art and giving birth to a baby)
Conceit
A fanciful and elaborate figure of speech that makes a surprising connection between two
seemingly dissimilar things.
