what is ATP?
adenosine triphosphate, or adenine, ribose, and three phosphate groups; stores a small amount of energy, but more than ADP
what is ADP?
adenosine diphosphate, or adenine, ribose, and two phosphate groups; store a smaller amount of energy than ATP
what is photosynthesis?
the process of using the sunlight's energy to convert water and CO2 into oxygen and sugar to feed the plant
what is chlorophyll?
the main pigment in plants; found in the chloroplasts
what are pigments?
they absorb and reflect light; by absorbing light, they absorb energy
what is respiration?
in biology, respiration is the process of releasing energy by breaking down food molecules in the presence of oxygen
what is glycolysis?
the process of releasing a small amount of energy from glucose; glucose ends up as two molecules of pyruvic acid; requires 2 ATP, produces 4
what is fermentation?
two types: alcoholic and pyruvic acid (latter used by body); converts NADH to NAD+
what does anaerobic mean?
without air
what does anaerobic excercise produce?
lactic acid buildup
