superior
These terms refer to a structure being closer to the head or higher than another structure of
the body. Not respect to limbs.
Anterior
These terms refer to a structure being more in front than another structure in the body. The
term "anterior" is preferred.
Posterior
These terms refer to a structure being more in back than another structure in the body. The term
"posterior" is preferred.
Medial
This term refers to a structure that is closer to the median plane than another structure in the
body. "Medial" isn't synonymous w/ "Median"
lateral
This term refers to a structure that is further away from the median plane than another
structure in the body
Proximal
Employed only with reference to the limbs, this term refers to a structure being close to
median plane
distal
employed with reference to the limbs further away from the median plane
Inferior
structure being closer to the feet or the lower part of the body than another structure of body
superficial (external)
a body part is located near the surface; the skin is superficial to the muscles
Deep(internal)
the body part is located away from the surface; the intestines are deep to the spine
