Sentence
Complete structure of meaning.
Clause
A subject and a predicate
Intransitive verb
A verb that doesn't lead to an object. E.g. I ran. The door opened. The tree stood still.
Transitive verb
A verb that leads to an object. E.g. I opened the door. It struggled to breathe. The carrot
lurched at the bunny.
Subject
The main focus/actor.
Object
The acted upon.
Indirect object
Another object that benefits form the action E.g. Crystabel threw of her gown and sent the
candelabra flying into the cauldron.
Preposition
A word that tells of the relationship between the noun or pronoun + other words: *on* the
wood.Piggle pointed *at* the wibbly rake. *under*
Predicate
A verb that describes the action of the subject. Harry went to... The sea forced
Auxiliary Verb
A word that adds support to a verb E.g. be, do, have.
Perfect
Involving 'had/has, been/being
Determiner
A word that determines the reference of a noun E.g. a, an, every
Adverb
A word that adds meaning to a verb, adjective, another adverb or the whole sentence. E.g. ran
*fast*, Ate *messily*
Subordinate clause
A clause lesser, than the main clause in a sentence
Monotransitive verb
A verb connecting one subject and one object.
Continuous
An ongoing action E.g. running flying swooning.
Voiceless sound
Open vocal chords
Voiced sound
Closed vocal chords
Noun phrase
Various types of groups of words. E.g. simply a noun 'john', or perhaps coupled with a
determiner or adjective.
Countable noun
E.g. Apple, table, card. These can be pluralised and therefor counted.
Uncountable noun
E.g. furniture, comfort - can't be made plural.
Pronoun
A word that is used in place of a noun or noun phrase E.g. He, She, her, him, they
Verb
A word or group of words used to describe an action, experience or state
Plural nouns - used with singular verbs
E.g. Darts is a game played by large men
Collective nouns
E.g. Family, government, army
Compound nouns
E.g. Walking stick, Cherry tree, town hall, boyfriend
Personal pronouns:
E.g. I, you, he, she, they, it
Personal pronouns: object pronouns
E.g. Him, her, it, us, them
Personal pronouns: reflexive pronouns
E.g. Myself, yourself, himself, herself, themselves, ourselves
Personal pronouns: possessive pronouns
E.g. Mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs
Relative pronouns
E.g. Who, whose, what, where, which, that - used to introduce relative clauses.

Article
Specific part of determiners
Definite article
"the". Used when we know what is being referred to. Can be used to make general statements with a
singular noun E.g. The great white shark..
Indefinite article
"a/an" Used to refer to thing or person when we don't know specifics. Can also be used to specify
a group with one memberE.g.a man's gotta
Comparative and superlative adjectives
Big, bigger, biggest. Exceptions: Good, Better, Best
Adjective sequence
SCOMP - noun. Size, colour, origin, material, purpose, noun.
Adjectives as nouns
E.g. the blind, the poor.
Adjective and preposition
E.g. Interested in, Keen on, Happy about etc.
One word: Adjective or Adverb?
Depends on whether it is modifying a verb or noun.
Verb tense
Referring to what time (past, present, future) *Smae tense can be used to describe more than
one time.
Verb aspect
Depends on whether we want to say the action is ongoing to or complete. (Simple, continuous,
perfect etc.)
Modal Auxiliary verbs
Often used in conditional sentences, to express judgment or likelihood, E.g. Shall, would,
can, should, might, may, must
Person
the speaker: first person, the addressee: second person, or a third party: third person.
Infinitive
Basic form of a verb.
Be
Be, being, been. Am, are, is. Was, were.
Have
Has, had
Do
Did, done, does
Main verb
Stand alone, or expresses the main idea.
Particle
Word that has a function but does not fit into terminology.
Simple
The base form of a verb. Optional with basic tense..
Continuous
-ing verbs with 'to be'
Participle
Only two, past and present
Phrase
a group of words that form a meaningful unit within a clause E.g. Noun phrase, adverbial
phrase, prepositional phrase etc.
Conjunction
Words that join phrases, clauses, or sentences. E.g. And, because, but, for, if, or , when
Present simple
Only changes with 3rd person singular.
