The Skeletal System: Appendicular Division
23 cards·by jennybakalov
appendicular skeleton
includes the bones of the upper and lower limbs, and the supporting elements, called girdles,
that connect them to the trunk
girdles
supporting elements that connect the upper and lower limbs to the trunk
pectoral girdle (shoulder girdle)
the area where each arm articulates with the trunk
clavicle
connects the pectoral girdle and the axial skeleton
sternal end
rough and pyramidal in shape; area from where the clavicle curves in an S shape laterally and
dorsally
acromial end
the end of the clavicle that is broader and flatter than the sternal end
conoid tubercle
on the inferior surface at the acromial end
costal tuberosity
at the sternal end
body of the scapula
forms a broad triangle with many surface markings reflecting the attachment of muscles,
tendons, and ligaments
superior border
the upper border of the scapular triangle
medial (vertebral) border
the inner border of the scapular triangle that is nearest the body
lateral (axillary) border
the outer border of the scapular triangle that is furthest from the body
superior angle
the upper right hand corner of the scapular triangle
inferior angle
the lower corner of the scapular triangle
lateral angle
head of the scapula; forms a broad process that supports the cup-shaped glenoid cavity, or
glenoid fossa
glenoid cavity (glenoid fossa)
where the scapula articulates with the proximal end of the humerus, the bone of the arm
glenohumeral (shoulder) joint
the articulation where the scapula articulates with the humerus
neck
separates the lateral angle from the body of the scapula
subscapular fossa
relatively smooth, concave; forms most of the anterior surface of the scapula
coracoid process
a smaller, anterior projection; korakodes - like a crow's beak; projects anteriorly and
slightly laterally, and serves as an attachment site
suprascapular notch
an indentation medial to the base of the coracoid process
acromion
akron - tip + omos - shoulder; the larger posterior process, projects anteriorly at a 90 degree
angle
acromioclavicular joint
where the acromion articulates with the clavicle
