brainpsychology
What is a lesion?
A natural or intentional destruction of brain tissue.
What is the brainstem?
The part of the brain between the cerebral cortex and the spinal cord responsible for survival
functions
What is the hindbrain?
A region of the brain that includes the cerebellum, the pons, and the medulla. It supports
vital bodily processes.
What is the medulla?
Part of the hindbrain that is involved in breathing, heartbeat, and other essential
functions
What is the pons?
Part of the hindbrain that is involved in relaying information from the cortex, as well as in
sleep and arousal.
What is reticular formation?
A network of nerve fibers involved in sleep and wakefulness. Also called the reticular
activating system (RAS).
What is the cerebellum?
A part of the hindbrain involved in the development and coordination of movement.
What is ataxia?
Loss of coordination of muscle movements.
What is the midbrain?
Part of the brainstem involved in control of sensory processes,
What is substantia nigra?
A midbrain structure that is responsible for initiation of movement.
What is the forebrain?
The largest part of the brain, consisting of a number of structures including the cerebrum,
the thalamus, and the limbic system.
What is the thalamus?
A forebrain structure that is a major relay station for sensory information.
What is the hypothalamus?
A forebrain structure that detects need states and controls the autonomic nervous system and
pituitary hormone production
What it the limbic system?
A group of structures surrounding the brainstem that governs emotons such as anger,
happiness, and fear and stores and retrieves newmemories
What is the amygdala?
A cluster of neurons in the temporal lobe linked to emotions such as anger and fear.
