Lead
The beginning of a news story, often consisting of just one sentence.
Inverted Pyramid
A style of news writing in which the main facts appear at the top of the article and less-significant facts follow until the end.
Summary Lead
A lead that provides the briefest possible summary of the major facts of a story in the first sentence.
Five W
Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. These elements belong in nearly every newspaper story.
Tease
To use a lead that coaxes readers into a story by encouraging them to read further to see what the lead really means.
Quote Lead
A lead that begins with an unattributed quote, usually to be avoided because it is unclear.
Question Lead
A lead that begins with a question, generally to be avoided.
Descriptive Lead
A lead that attempts to create a picture in the reader's mind.
Action Lead
A lead that sets up the action/conflict for the story in the first couple of sentences.
Dialogue Lead
A lead that begins with a conversation between two or more characters.
