Original Jurisdiction
Courts that have the power to hear trials ( witnesses, juries, lawyers)
General Original Jurisdiction
these courts can hear a variety of different types of trials
Limited Original Jurisdiction
these courts can hear only certain types of trials based on their subject
Appellate Jurisdiction
Courts that can ONLY hear appeals (no witnesses, no juries, court reviews the proceeding
below and determine if there was error)
Two Court Systems
State Court and Federal Court
The State Courts
Each State has its own system. Eac. are similar- original and appellate jurisdiction courts
Workhorse
General Original Jurisdiction- can hear trials of most any type of case. Courts are inundated
with cases.
Legislature has attempted to reduce the workload of the Superior Court by creating inferior
courts

Baby Brother Courts
Limited Jurisdiction
Only hear cases w. a value less than 15k. Jurisdiction Limited. "Small Claims Court"
Magistrate Court
Estates of Deceased Person. Jurisdiction Limited- Only hear cases: Wills and Trust /
Guardianship
Probate Court
Small(er) criminal court. Only hear criminal cases that are misdemeanors.
State Court
Small(er) Criminal Court. Only hear criminal cases committed by Juveniles.
Juvenile Court
Appellate Courts: Issues of Fact
Cannot be appealed. Facts determined by Jury. Jury's determination is final
Appellate Courts: Issues of Law
Can be appealed. Judge ruling only. Error- Judge has erred in a decision
Appellate Courts: Georgia Court Of Appeals
If either side can point to a Judge's error then we can appeal to the GCOA. Located in ATL. 15
Judges. A panel of 3 are choose to review cas
GCOA pt2.
The panel reviews the ruling being appealed. No witnesses, No evide. Panel make decision
(usually in writing)
Federal Courts: The Federal District Courts
Ea State has 1. Some states have several Division. Original Jurisdiction. Trials,
Witnesses, Evidence, and Juries
Federal Courts: The Federal Appellate Courts
States are combined into Circuits. 11 different Circuit
GA and AL are in the 11th Circuit
