Archaeology
cultural anthro. of human past focusing on human evidence of human modification of the phys. environment.
Archaeological record
all material objects constructed by humans or near-humans revealed by archeology.
Site
A precise geographical location of the remains of past human activity.
Artifacts
objects that have been deliberately and intelligently shaped by human or near human activity.
Features
Nonportable remnats from the past, such as house walls or ditches.
Ethnoarchaeology
Study of how present-day societies uses artifacts and structures and how they become part of the archaeological record.
Survey
The physical examination of a geographical region in which promising sites are most likely to be found.
Excavation
systematic uncovering of archaeological remains through the deposits of soil and other material covering them.
Substinence Strategy
different ways that people in different societies go about meeting their basic material survival needs.
Band
form of social organization. small, no more than 50 people and labour is divided through age and sex. Adults have equal access to materials.
Tribe
A society that is larger than a band who farm or herd. may be a chief who speaks for the group.
Sodalities
special purpose groupings that may be organized on the basis of age sex economic role and personal interest.
Status
a particular social position in a group.
State
a territory that is defended from outside enemies with an army, and police for internal problems. run by the elite that possess monopoly.
Feminist Archaeology
research that explores why womens contributions have been written out of archaeology records.
Historical Archaeology
the study of archaeological sites associated with written records. ex. the study of post-european contact sites in the world.
