Consciousness
states of awareness of ourselves and our environment
Conscious Level
The level at which mental activities that people are normally aware of occur
Levels of Consciousness
The degree of a patients alertness of self and environment, varying from wakefulness to coma
Nonconscious Level
a level of mental activity that is inaccesible to conscious awareness
Preconscious Level
a level of mental activity that is not currently conscious but of which we can easily become conscious
Subconscious Level
Information that we are not consciously aware of but we know must exist due to behavior
Unconscious Level
a level of mental activity that influences consciousness but is not conscious
Sleep
a natural and periodic state of rest during which consciousness of the world is suspended
Sleep Cycles
4-6 complete ones, each about 90 minutes, early in the night most time in stage 3 and 4 and 2 predominate later
