Black Codes
term used by Southerners to mock Northerners who came to the SOuth to gain either financially or politically during Reconstruction
Carpetbaggers
struck down Black Codes and defined the rights of all citizens
Civil Rights Act of 1866
the political arrangement ended the contested presidential election of 1876; Southern reps agreed to recognize Rutherford B Hayes as pres
Compromise of 1877
ratified in 1870 and stated that a person could not be denied the right to vote because of skin color or past of slavery
Fifteenth Amendment
ratified in 1868 and stated that "all persons born or naturalized in the US" were citizens;all old Confed supporters unable to hold office
Fourteenth Amendment
term for freed blacks in the South after the Civil War
Freedmen
Congress created this in 1865 to assist the newly freed slaves
Freedmen's Bureau
a step in the process of removing an elected public official from office
Impeachment
organization founded during Reconstruction by Southerners who wanted to maintain white supremacy; used terror tactics; still exists today
Ku Klux Klan
fought to restore the Union during the Civil War; issued Emancipation Proclomation
Abraham Lincoln
a method that a president can use to 'kill' legislation at the end of a congressional term
Pocket Veto
group of republicans after the Civil War who favored harsh treatment of the defeated South
Radical Republicans
plan of the Radical Republicans to control South; former Confed was divided into 5 military districts
Reconstruction Act
era following the Civil War when Radical Repubs initiated changes in the South; Resented by Southerners leading to KKK
Reconstruction Era
term used by Southerners in Rec Era for fellow Southerners who supported it; seen as allies with carpetbaggers
Scalawags
form of agricultural labor that emerged in the South after the Civil War; worked for a landlord but most became indebted
Sharecropping
Lincoln's plan for Reconstruction; offered pardons to most Southerners
Ten Percent Plan
a step up from sharecropping; rented land from landowner free from harsh supervision
Tenant Farmers
1867 congressional act designed to limit the influence of President Johnson
Tenure of Office Act
1865 amendment that abolished slavery in the US and all its territories
Thirteenth Amendment
Congress passed this bill in 1864 in response to Lincolns Ten Percent Plan; Lincoln killed it with pocket veto
Wade-Davis Act
