Direct & indirect actions used by an adult to help children develop socially
acceptablebehavior.
Guidance
Acts of kindness that benefit others, such as helping, sharing, & cooperationg.
Prosocial Behaviors
Outside factors influencing behavior, such as the layout of the center.
Indirect Guidance
Physical & verbal actions, such as facial & body gestures, that influence behavior.
Direct Guidance
Molding children's behavior by rewarding positive behavior.
Positive Reinforcement
A result that follows an actions or behavior.
Consequence
Experiences that follow naturally as a result of a behavior.
Natural Consequences
Those that are deliberately set up by an adult to show what will happen if a rule is broken.
Artificial Consequences
A guidance technique used when a child's behavior cannot be ignored. It excuses the child from
others to gain self-control.
Time-Out
A verbal statement that explains the effect of a child's behavior on others without placing
blame.
I-Message
Making a verbal or nonverbal suggestion that requires a response; used either to stop an
unacceptable action or start an acceptable one.
Prompting
Diverting or turning a child's attention in a different diretion.
Redirecting
Verbal & nonverbal actions by one person, setting an example for others.
Modeling
Listening to what is said, then repeating it.
