The Muscular System
14 cards·by jennybakalov
skeletal muscle
a contractile organ of the muscular system
cardiac muscle
the muscular tissue of the heart
smooth muscle
muscle tissue found in the walls of many visceral organs
muscular system
consists of more than 700 skeletal muscles and includes all the skeletal muscles that can be
controlled voluntarily
excitability
the ability to respond to stimulation
contractility
the ability to shorten actively and exert a pull or tension that can be harnessed by connective
tissue
extensibility
the ability to continue to contract over a range of resting lengths
elasticity
the ability of a muscle to rebound toward its original length after a contraction
skeletal muscles
contractile organs directly or indirectly attached to bones of the skeleton
skeletal movement produced by skeletal muscles
muscle contractions pull on tendons and move the bones of the skeleton
maintenance of posture and body position by skeletal muscles
contraction of specific muscles also maintains body posture
support of soft tissues by skeletal muscles
the abdominal wall and the floor of the pelvic cavity consist of layers of skeletal muscle
regulation of entering and exiting of material by skeletal muscles
these muscles provide voluntary control over swallowing, defecation, and urination
maintenance of body temperature by skeletal muscles
the heat lost by contracting muscles keeps our body temperature in the range required for
normal functioning
