External Respiration
the exchange of gases (as oxygen and carbon dioxide) between the cells of the body and the bloodby way of the fluid bathing the cells
Internal Respiration
the volume of gas that is contained in the lungs at the end of maximal inspiration
Total Lung Capacity
the amount of air which enters the lungs during normal inhalation at rest
Tidal Volume
a respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty inbreathing
Asthma
inflammation of the lining of your bronchial tubes, which carry air to and from your lungs
Bronchitis
a group of lung diseases that block airflow and make it difficult to breathe
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
a viral infection of the upper respiratory system
Common Cold
a condition in which the air sacs of the lungs are damaged and enlarged, causingbreathlessness
Emphysema
a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory passages causing fever, severeaching, and catarrh; often occurring in epidemics
Influenza
infection that inflames air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid
Pneumonia
a collapsed lung
Pneumothorax
a condition in which the cavities around the nasal passages become inflamed
Sinusitis
a potentially serious infectious bacterial disease that mainly affects the lungs
Tuberculosis
Medulla Oblongata
Respiratory Center of the Brain
mainly the motor nerves of the diaphragm, but also sends sensory fibers to different parts ofthe respiratory system
Phrenic Nerves
the part projecting above the mouth on the face of a person or animal, containing the nostrilsand used for breathing and smelling
Nose
one of the pair of cavities between the anterior nares and the nasopharynx
Nasal Cavity
recessed cavity or hollow space
Sinus
partition between the two nasal cavities
