Theme and Coverage Vocabulary

The last few pages of the yearbook, typically where the yearbook staff shares the final reinforcing message about the theme of the yearbook.
closing
An inscription page found at the end of the yearbook listing details that pertain to print specifications of the book.
colophon
Text in a book. It can be the body copy, caption copy or headline copy.
Copy
Thick Cardboard (binder board) covered with printed or silk-screened materials that protects the pages.
Cover
A single page or double page spread used to separate each section of the yearbook.
Divider
Heavy sheet of paper that attaches the book to the cover. There is an end sheet in both the front and back of the book.
Endsheet
The first few pages of the book, where the yearbook staff typically reinforces the theme introduced on the cover for the first time.
Opening
Used as a way to organize the yearbook for the staff and the reading audiences. Typical yearbook sections include Student Life, Academics.
Section
Phrases and logos that come from the theme concept and are used for each section of the book.
Spin-Offs
Two facing pages in a publication. A spread should take into account what the eyes see on the two facing pages.
Spread
A verbal Statement and a visual look that bring all parts of the yearbook together. The theme should exemplify your student body, school.
Theme
Coverage that allows yearbook staffs to tell their students stories in multiple ways. Can include surveys Q , top ten, quizzes and charts.
Alternate Coverage
Topics that will be featured on individual spreads as well as how the topics will be highlighted.
Coverage
Also called process color. The process to produce color pages on an offset press.
Four-Color Process
One side of a signature; the eight pages that are printed on one side of a press sheet.
Flat
A complete aphabetical listing, along with corresponding page numbers of all students, teachers and administrators featured in the yearbook.
Index
The overall map that shows the placement of every layout in the yearbook. The more complete and detailed a ladder is, is easier to complete.
Ladder Diagram
Sometimes called Sigs. Sixteen pages that are printed on both sides of one press sheet on an offset press.
Signature
A binding method where 16 pages are printed on one sheet of paper, then folded and ultimately sewn together with other signatures to build.
Smythe sewn binding
One color that is printed on a page, usually black and white page for emphasis.
