Innacurate and simplistic overgeneralizations about a group that causes peopleto categorize and judge that group in a particulat matter.
Stereotypes
The quality of literary work that makes the reader or audience uncertain or tense about the outcome of events
Suspense
The main idea put forward in a piece of writing. This is expressed in a sentence or 2 in an opening paragraph of an essay.
Thesis statement
The sentence that presents the main idea of a paragraph of and essay etc. what all details in the paragraph serve to support
Topic sentence
Refers to the ways in which the elements are arranged
Balance
The element that pulls the viewers eye and is the center of attention. Sometimes the first part of the visual that you see
Focal point
Refers to the arrangement of opposite elements ex. Light vs. dark
Contrast
A stanza of 2 lines usually rhyming
Couplet
The literal meaning of the word, the dictionary definition
Denotation
Effective word choice to create a desired affect or to help make a particular point
Diction
Metaphor, similie, personification. Language that is symbolic or representive of something else. It has meaning beyond the literal meaning.
Figurating language
Poetry that has no set rhyme or rhythm
Free verse
Refers to the type of writing. The major ones are poetry, short fiction, drama and essays
Genre
An obvious or intentional exxaggeration
Hyperbole
A pattern in poetry which consists offive iambic feet per line.
Iambic pentameter
The time and place and circumstances of a story take place
Setting
The implied or suggested meaning of a word.refers to the associations and implications that go beyond the literal meaning.
Conotation
The following characteristics: a)tells a story b) 4 line stanzas c) abcb rhyme scheme
Ballad
The overall feeling in a piece of writing
Atmosphere/mood
The agreement in vowel sounds of 2 or more words, when the sounds preceeding the following vowels dont agree
Assonance
A reference to a piece of knowledge the writer assumes the reader will know in order to make the topic being discussed more understandable.
Allusion
Words in close proximity with the same beginning sound at the start of 2 or more words
Alliteration
The reason a writer has in mind for the writing he/she does
Purpose
Is the main character or hero in a story who acts against the antagonist
Protagonist
The author may report any relevant event, move back in forth in time and space
Third person-omniscient
The narrorator acts as a witness to the events and watches the story unfold.
Third person- limited
Where one character is adressing the other as" you". It is rarely ever used yet used in dramatic plays often
Second person
The narrorator is a character in the story that refers to his or herself as "I". The reader can only know,hear what the character knows
First person
The eyes through which a story is told
Point-of-view
Using examples to support a point or idea
Examples and illustrations
Classifying a subject into different groupings and then further sub-dividing those classifications
Classification and division
A step by step analysis of how to do something or how something works
Process analysis
Block and side by side methods highlighting the similarities and differences between 2 things
Comparison and contrast
Explaining what causes a particular result or what the effects of one subject matter are upon another
Cause and effect
Is the use of hints or clues to suggest what will happen later in a piece of narrarative writing
Foreshadowing
Is action that interrupts the present to show and event that happened at an earlier time that gives a better understanding of the story
Flashback
The overall cimpression conveyed in a piece of descriptive writing
Dominant impression
The surrounding details that give an idea, concept or event a more complete and fuller meaning.
Context
A conflict with the outside world
External conflict
A struggle within a characters mind between 2 decisions, both of which have positive and negative consequenses
Internal conflict
A struggle between 2 opposing forces
Conflict
The incident in a story that begins the conflict or places the storys protagonist in a situation. Everything is running smoothly until now
Complication of plot
The repeating of a word or phrase in one sentence or paragraph to link that sentence or paragraph to a previous one
Repitition
The point of greatest suspense or tension in a narrarativeafter which all conflicts are resolved
Climax
The author develops character through what the character says,does,thinks and physical description
Characterization
A character that shows so change throughout a story. He/she is the same from beggining to end
Static
A character that changes or develops over time as the story progresses. These changes come as a result of conflicts faced .
Dynamic
This character is very one sided and one dimensional. He/she is only in the story to complicate matters or act as the antagonist
Flat
A character that is well developed in the story. The reader sees more then one side or aspect of his/her personality
Round
A character who is opposite to or challenges the protagonist
Antagonist
Is a word or group of words in literary work which appeal to one or more of the senses.
Imagery
A suprising twist or plot
Irony
The actual word for word meaning of the text. This is not implied or with a deeper meaning.it is the actual surface meaning.
Literal meaning
The comparison of 2 basacilly unalike things that have at least 1 thing in common.
Metaphor
The speaker in a piece of poetry or prose. The eyes through which the story is told
Narrorator
Is a word that imitates or suggests the source of the sound that it describes
Onomatopeia
The combining of 2 contradictory words
Oxymoron
Something that is not is given human characteristics
Personification
A stanza consisting of 4 lines
A quatrain
A rhyming pattern in a poem that share the same sounds in different words
Rhyme scheme
