Unit 1.1.3 Input, Output and Storage
12 cards·by gurundus
What types of storage devices can be used?
Magnetic Storage, Optical Storage and Flash Memory.
What is magnetic storage like?
it has a high capacity and is quick to access data although has moving parts which will
eventually fail
What are examples of magnetic storage?
Hard disk drives and magnetic tape
What is optical storage like?
Optical media are cheap to purchase but have lower capacity compared to other types of storage
and are slow to access.
What are examples of optical storage?
CD, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW and DVD
What is flash memory like?
Flash memory is generally more expensive per GB but it operates at much higher speeds and uses
less power as it has no moving parts
What are exmples of flash memory?
USB memory drives, SD cards and solid state drives.
What are the two types of Virtual Storage?
Emulated Primary Storage and Cloud Storage
Why is Emulated Primary Storage required?
If the machine runs out of primary memory it has to accomodate more memory so it uses EPS
What are the Disadvantages of paging?
Reading from secondary storage into the RAM takes significantly longer than just reading
from RAM and it can also cause "disc thrashing".
What is an advantage of cloud storage?
it reduces costs as you don't need to buy a large server for large amounts of data.
What is an disadvantage of cloud storage?
you can no longer control your own security, so could be more vulnerable
