Study this deck
endocrine glands
secrete their products into extracellular spaces, where they are picked up and ransported by the circulatory system
exocrine glands
secrete their products by way of a duct (tube) onto a surface
amino acid based molecules
range rom small amino acids to huge proteins, they are water soluable and includes the majority of hormones
steroids
derivatives of cholesterol, are lipid soluable, can pass through cell membranes, includes only gonadal and some adrenal hormones
receptors
large proteins found mostly on the cell's surface
intracellular receptor
receptorfound within a cell, react with those hormones which are able to poass through a cell's membrane, stops and starts protein synthesis
plasma membrane receptor
receptor found on a cell's surface, generates activity of "second messengers" inside the cell which then alter the cell's activity
hormonally
some endocrine glands are stimulated by hormones produced by other endocrine glands
humorally
some endocrine glands secrete their hormones in direct response to changing blood levels of some ion or nutrient
neutrally
some glands are neutrallly stimulated to secrete
neurohyophysis
the posterior half of the pituitary gland, portion attached to the brain
Adenohypopysis
the anterior half of the pituitary gland
parathyroid gland
gland located on the posterior surface of thyroid and secretes parathormone
adrenal gland
gland located one on top of each kidney
zona glomerulosa
secretes a group of hormones known as mineral corticoids, which control electrolyte levels in blood
zona fasiculata
secretes glucocorticoids
zona reticularis
secretes small amounts of gonadocorticoids, primarily testosterone and estrogen
pancreas
a mixed gland in that it has both exo and endocrine portions
alpha cells
secrete glucagon
glucagon
increases blood glucose by promoting the breakdown of glycogen to glucose
beta cells
secrete insulin
insulin
decreases blood glucose levels
diabetes insipidus
a pituitary disorder resulting in insuffient ADH, therefore fluid loss
diabetes mellitus
a collection of disorders grouped together becasue they result in hypergycemia (excess blood sugar)
Type 1
either a virus or an immune system disorder and its progressively destroying beta cells, thus insulin levels steadily decreae
Type 2
approximately 90% of diabetes cases, strong genetic link and strongy correlation with excessive weight
ovaries
primary source of female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone
testes
produce testosterone which contorls development which controls development/maintenence of male sex organs, sex char. and sperm
pineal gland
gland found in the center of he brain and functions are a mystery
thymus gland
gland located in the front of the heart, size diminishes with age, usually disappearing by age 30
gastrointestinal tract
a tube from mouth to anus
accessory organs
organs which contribute to, but they aren't part of the tube (liver, pancreas, gall bladder)
