Lead
the beginning of a news story, often consisting of just one sentence.
Inverted pyramid
a style of news writing in which the main facts appear at the top of the article (the lead) and less-significant facts follow until the end.
Summary lead
a lead that provides the briefest possible summary of the major facts of a story in the first sentence.
Five W's and the H
Who, what, when, where, why, and how.
Tease
to use a lead that coaxes readers into a story by encouraging them to read further to see what the lead really means.
Quote lead
a lead that begins with an unattributed quote, usually to be avoided because its unclear
Question lead
a lead that begins with a question, generally to be avoided.
Descriptive lead
a lead that attempts to create a picture in the reader's mind
action lead
a lead that sets up the action/conflict for the story in the first couple of sentences
dialogue
lead that begins with a conversation between two or more.
