What is US?
frequencies above the range of normal human hearing
ultrasound
less than 20,000 Hz or 20 kHz; diagnostic US uses frequencies of 1-20 million cycles per second;transducers contain crystals that vibrate
1-20 MHz
frequencies of 1-20 million cycles per second
transducers contain crystals that vibrate and send out signals into the body
organs and tissues react to the sound differently by either absorbing, reflecting, or scattering the sound signal
US probe frequencies
low frequencies are able to penetrate deeper into the body so we use lower frequencies to scan structures that are deeper in the body
low frequencies
2-5 MHz; used for abdominal organs and vessels, heart, pelvic organs and vessels, babies, etc.
high frequencies
10-15 MHz; used for blood vessels in the arms, legs, and neck, the thyroid, breast, scrotum, etc.
What can we image?
how dense a structure is determines how fast the sound waves will travel through it; US does not scan lungs, stomach, bowel, or bone well
How dense a structure is determines how fast the sound waves will travel through it
sound waves travel slowly through gas/air; bone is too dense and absorbs all of the sound allowing no reflection back to the transducer
