AIDS
Acquired immunodeficiency Syndrome
Allergen
Environmental substance that causes a reaction
Allergy
The immune response is too intense (hypersensitive) to an environmental substane
Anoxia
No oxygen, causes cellular injury
Antibodies
Immune bodies. Proteins that the body produces to react to and render antigens harmless
Antigens
Substances that cause the body some type of harm. Sets off a specific antigen-antibody reaction
Atrophy
Decrease in cell size which leads to a decrease in the size of tissue and organ (a- without trophy- growth)
Autoimmunity
Immune response attacks itself. Lymphocytes cant identify the bodies own self antigens which are harmless
Benign
Not cancerous. Having limited growth and easily removed
Cachexia
An individual who has an ill, thin, and wasted, appearance
Cancer
Any malignant tumor
Congenital
Hereditary diseases present at birth
Degenerative
Diseases related to aging
Dysplasia
An alteration in size, shape and organization of cells dys- bad or difficult plasia- growth
Encapsulated
Enclosed in a capsule
Enteral
Small intestine route
Gangrene
When saprophytic bacteria become involved in necrotic tissue
Hyperplasia
An overgrowth in response to some type of stimulus hyper- excessive plasia- growth
Hypertrophy
An increase in the size of the cell leading to an increase in tissue and organ size hyper- excessive trophy- growth
Hypoxia
Not enough oxygen
Immunodeficiency
Immune response is not able to defend the body for lack of leukocytes, primarily, lymphocytes
Infarct
The area of dead cells when necrosis occurs due to ischemia
Infection
Refers to the invasion of microorganisms
Inflammation
Protective immune response that is triggered by any type of injury or irritant
Ischemia
Hypoxia caused by decreased blood flow
Malignant
Tumors that grow uncontrollably and have finger-like projections that take hold the surrounding tissue making removal difficult
Metaplasia
Cellular adaption in which the cell changes into another type of cell meta- changed plasia- growth
Metastasize
To move
Metastatic
Cancer that moves from a site of origin to another secondary site in the body
Morbitity
Disability; state of being diseased
Morbitity
Disability; state of being diseased
Necrosis
Cellular death
Neoplasia
Development of a new type of cell with an uncontrolled growth pattern neo- new plasia- growth
Neoplasm
Increase in cell number leading to an increase in tissue size
Oncology
Study of cancer onco- tumor ology- study of
Organ Regection
Without immunosuppressant medications, the body's immune system would recognize the organ as foreign and attack it, leading to organ death
Parenteral
Subcutaneous, intramuscular, or intravenous feeding
TPN
Total parenteral nutrition
Trauma
Disease caused by physical injury from an external force
Triage
Prioritizing care
Tumor
Neoplasms
