What is epidemiology?
The study of the factors of human health and illness
What is a dependent variable?
The variable that is being measured or observed
What is an independent variable?
The variable that is being manipulated or changed.
What is a control group?
Group that remains constant as a form of comparison.
What is a hypothesis?
A testable explanation of a phenomenon, can not be proven, only tested.
What is a theory?
A well-tested and generaly agreed-upon hypothesis that explains some data.
What is an experiment?
A test of sorts, meant to prove or disprove a hypothesis.
What is a variable?
Something being measured or manipulated in an experiment.
What is a pathogen?
Microorganism that causes disease in host
What is a virus?
A nonliving agent that duplicates itself using host cells
Give some examples of human viruses.
HPV, Flu, Common cold, chicken pox.
What is an antiviral drug?
Medicine that stops the development of a virus, attacks host cells so person can be harmed.
What is a vaccination?
When someone gets a minor case of a pathogen, so they can build up resistance.
What is HPV?
Most common viral STI, can cause cervical cancer, prevented by giving kids a vaccine.
What is HIV?
Attacks immune system, precursor to AIDS, no cure.
What is bacteria?
A single-celled organism that can carry infections.
Give some examples of bacterial infections.
Chlamydia, strep throat, tetanus, staph.
What are antibiotics?
Drugs that attack bacterial enzymes, but not human ones.
What is antibiotic immunity?
When antibiotics are overused, the bacteria can develop an immunity to it.
What was the Bubonic Plague?
Disease that killed 25million between 1346and 1350. Carried by fleas, found in prairie dogs today. Caused by bacterium Yersina pestis.
What is Chlamydia?
Most commonbacterial STI, transmitted through sex and childbirth. Curable with oral antibiotics.
