what does thrmal energy mean?
the sum of the kinetic and potential energy of the particles in an object
how does themal energy relate to heat and temperature?
-themal energy of am object increases as its temperature increases - heawt is the termal energy that flows
ways of thermal energy is transferred
-conduction -convection -radiation
what does conduction mean?
transfer of thermal energy by collisions betwwen particles in matter -requires matter
what does convection mean?
transfer of thermal energy in a fluid by the movement if warmer and cooler fluid from place to place-requires matter-ex:wind currents
what does radiation mean?
transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves -doesn't require matter -energy from the sun
what does insulator mean?
a material in which heat flows slowly
eamples of good insulators
-air -R-value: highernumber better insulator
what is a heat mover?
-does work to move heat from a cooler temperature to a warmer temperature -ex:refrigerator or air conditioner
what is a heat engine?
-converts thermal energy into mechanical energy -ex: internal combustion, gas or diesal, external combustion
what does temperature mean?
measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in the object
specifice heat
-amount of heat that is needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of some material by 1 degree C - depends on matter and termal energy
specifice heat-2
high specific heat means it absorbs a lot of energy with little temperature change
Q=m(tangle)TC
change in termal energy=mass (kg) times change in temperature (degree C) times specific heat (J/kg) -Q=m(tf-ti)C
forced-air-type of heating system
most common, fuel burned and heats a volume of air
actice solar
use solar collectors that absord radiatn energy from the sun
passive solar
materials inside a building absorb radiant energy from the sun
electirc
no central furnace
steam
flow through pipes to radiators
hot water
fuel burned in a central furnace heats the water
compare heat and temperature
-as a substance absorbs heat, the temperature change in the object depends on the nature of the substance -specific heat
contrast heat and temperature
-heat can change thermal energy -temperature is the measure of average kinetic energy of the particles in an object
