What is science?
A way of learning about the natural world
What is inferring?
Explaining or interpreting whats been observed;based on whats already known
What is prediction?
A claim or statement about what will happen in the future
What is classifying?
grouping alike items together
What is evaluating?
comparing observations in order to come to a conclusion
What is modeling?
creating a representation of a complex object or process
What is curiosity?
always asking the why
What is honesty?
reporting observations truthfuly
What is creativity?
thinking outside of the box
What is open-mindedness/scepticism?
1. accepting new and different ideas; yet have a healthy doubt
What is ethics?
rules to know right from wrong
What is awareness of bias?
expectation of what find, influences how it’s interpreted
What is scientific reasoning?
requires logical thinking based on observations and evidence
What is deductive reasoning?
general idea to a specific one
What is Faulty reasoning?
conclusion based on too little data can lead to this and lead to faulty conclusions
Why do scientists use a standard measurement system?
can be used universally and allows comunication
What is length?
the distance between two points
What is mass?
the amount of matter in an object
What is weight?
amount of gravity on an object
What is volume?
the amount of space an object takes up
What is density?
how much mass per given volume
What is time?
measurement length of an event
What is an estimation?
an approximation of numbers
What is accuracy?
how close a measurement to the true value
What is precision?
group of measurements are to each other
What are Significant figures?
how precise measurement is
What is the rule to sig. figs.?
answer can only have as many places as the # with the least sig fig
What is % error?
way to determined accuracy
What axis is the independent variable on?
X axis
What axis is the dependent variable on?
Y axis
What is science inquiry?
diverse ways to study natural world and propose explanations based on evidence
What is a controlled experiment?
one variable manipulated at a time; others stay same
How do we gain scientific knowledge?
Observation and Modeling
How do scientists form explanations?
research, design experiments, use models
What is empirical evidence?
• It is the data, observations that have been collected through scientific process
How do Scientists affect society?
• Make new discoveries • Discoveries can be challenges /debated • Disagreement causes controversy • Can change society by defending their wo
How does Scientific Knowledge Change?
• Result of new evidence New interpretations of existing evidence
What is a theory?
well tested explanation of observations
What is a law?
statement happens all the time- no explanation
Why do Scientists use models?
used to understand what can’t see naturally * representation of object or process Ex. Earth’s core; solar system; atoms
What is a system?
group of parts work together to perform a function or produce a result
What are the three parts of a system?
input, output, process
How are Models of Systems Used?
• Understand how systems work • Predicts changes in system
What features of an overlapping food chain make it good and effective
uses little space to show many organisms, and Uses arrows effectively to show flow
