First phase

Interphase - metabolic activity and preparation

Second phase

Prophase - chromosomes start to form

Third phase

Prometaphase - nuclear membranse dissolves

Fourth phase

Metaphase - metaphase plate forms

Fifth phase

Anaphase - paired chromosomes separate and move to opposite sides of the cell

Sixth phase

Telophase - chromatids arrive at opposite poles and new membranes form

Seventh phase

Cytokinesis - final phase where cells become separated
